Buying River Frontage and River Front Homes in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia
North Georgia's Blue Ridge area offers an abundance of clean water originating from the springs of the surrounding Appalachian mountains and valleys. All the waters support trout and other native fish. These streams and their tributaries are subject to the regulations by local, state and federal agencies. The regulations are in place to protect the beauty and purity of the streams. A major water divide occurs between Ellijay, GA and Blue Ridge, GA that separates the watershed into two major river basins. Water South of this line flows into the Coosa River drainage of which the Cartecay, Ellijay and Coosawatte are a part. Water North of the line flows into the Tennessee River drainage and includes the Toccoa River, the Nottely River and their tributaries. Buyers should take time to understand any regulations that may apply to property with stream frontage. Property owners can be good trout managers by using proper land use practices. Trees left along stream banks provide shade to keep water temperatures cold while their root systems help stabilize stream banks and prevent soil from washing into the stream and smothering trout eggs and aquatic insects.
Toccoa
The Toccoa River drainage feeds one of the premier rivers in the North Georgia. Major creeks include Wilscot Creek, Noontootla Creek, Big Creek, Stanley Creek, Hemptown Creek, Hothouse Creek and Fightingtown Creek.
